ABSTRACT

Conference presentations usually focus on successful innovations: new ideas that yield significant improvements to current practice. Yet we often learn more from failure than from success. In this panel, we present five case studies of "good ideas" for improving CS education (most related to the COVID-19 pandemic) that didn't go as planned. Each contributor will describe their "good idea", the situation that resulted, and wider lessons for the CS community.

ABSTRACT

This Research to Practice Full Paper presents the experiences and lessons learned from five programs that provide financial awards and a holistic student support structure to lowincome, academically talented students in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). This report synthesizes the experiences of a diverse set of institutions, both public and private, that vary in size and geographic location. We have experience supporting students from a range of disciplines with an emphasis on students studying Computer Science. The goals of this work are to (1) outline the decisions that must be considered when designing a financial award program;(2) describe the interventions we have implemented and underline the institutional contexts that have led to their success;(3) describe the unique challenges posed by the COVID pandemic;and (4) highlight key elements necessary for successful program implementation. We specifically discuss the challenges we have encountered when implementing existing best practices. We report observations and results, some of which buttress those reported in the literature. Our work is intended to serve as a guide for educators who wish to implement programs to support students from financially disadvantaged and/or historically marginalized groups. By sharing our experiences and pain points, we hope to make it easier for them to design and implement effective programs adapted to their institutional needs and contexts.

ABSTRACT

Collaboration in a supply chain continuously proves its role in increasing the performance of supply chains, which attracts the attention of both academia and practitioners, specifically, how to generate higher impacts of collaborative partnership on the performance of supply chains and measure them. In cold supply chains of agriculture and foods, the vital need for collaboration becomes even more significant to improve the performance. Therefore, this paper reviews relevant articles derived from the Web of Science and Scopus databases. Via the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA), the research team classifies the types of collaborative partnership in cold agriculture and food supply chains, issues of the literature when analyzing collaboration impacts on the performance of CSCs of agriculture and foods, and finally, the opportunities for the future research to boost the collaboration practices in these cold chains. Following this sequence, 102 articles were eventually extracted for the systematic review to identify themes for not only addressing the review questions but also highlighting future research opportunities for both development of partnership integration and performance of the cold chains of agriculture and foods.

ABSTRACT

In recent years, there have been recommendations to decrease prescribing of opioids for noncancer pain. Chronic pain should primarily be managed by nonpharmacologic or nonopioid pharmacologic therapy. A thorough medical history and proper diagnosis assist with appropriate management. When using opioids for pain management, the lowest effective dosage and shortest duration should be utilized. If tapering opioids is appropriate, the provider needs to utilize effective communication strategies, follow up frequently, and utilize validated assessment tools to help reduce withdrawal symptoms. Telemedicine can be employed during the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure continued medication access and to provide regular follow-up. © 2022, Jobson Publishing Corporation. All rights reserved.

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic presents major challenges for mental health care providers. In particular, providers who treat posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are now tasked with determining whether to initiate trauma-focused therapy during the pandemic and, if so, whether and how to adapt treatment. The purpose of this communication is to identify and organize key considerations for whether and how to deliver commonly used evidence-supported therapy protocols for trauma treatment-specifically, cognitive processing therapy (CPT) and prolonged exposure (PE) therapy-during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic for adults who currently meet the criteria for PTSD. Based on relevant public health and clinical literature, we present a structured guide that can be used by treatment teams and individual providers to evaluate whether initiating CPT or PE is indicated given a particular patient-provider pair and system context amidst pandemic conditions. In addition, we suggest appropriate action steps, including problem-solving strategies, evidence-informed modifications to CPT and PE, and alternative intervention approaches.
